“Please sit, Mr. Newsome.”

“Call me Jim.”

She smiled as we both sat.

“You did excellent work. Your suggestions were well thought out, if not well received in the beginning by the committee. Actually, I must admit to a bit of enjoyment as I watched the reactions to your person as well as your analysis. Well done.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

“Call me Ruth.”

“Ruth.” She took an envelope off her desk and handed it to me. “The rest of your fee, Jim.”

“Thank you.” I stuck it in my briefcase.

“You will, of course, continue to work with the hospital as we try to shake off our outmoded thinking and move into the twenty-first century? I would be glad of your advice from time to time.”

“My pleasure. I won’t be starting another consultation for a few weeks yet. I need time to recover from all this.”
