Which was exactly what he was doing when there came a knock at the door. Caught off guard, Seth stood there staring at the slab of wood as though it would tell him who stood on the other side. There was another knock, accompanied by some faint muttering. His curiosity won out.

“Be right with you!” he hollered.

In his bedroom Seth swiftly donned a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt. Then went to see about his caller. Outside, the rain continued to play its beat against the tin roof.

Seth yanked open the door. His eyebrows shot up while a droplet of warmth trickled down his spine. “Derrick, to what do I owe the pleasure? You look like a drowned rat.”

Derrick’s hair was plastered to his head and his clothes clung awkwardly. The slight chattering of his teeth suggested the storm had dropped the temperature by a few degrees.

“Flat tire, and my phone is dead.”
