Chapter 18

He gave the other man one keen look. “You weren’t just regular army, were you? Not a Seal, as you were army, but some kind of special forces…”

“Don’t blow my cover,” Adam replied. “But, yeah, I had some extra training. Finally got tired of being one of those living weapons of stealth destruction. When I heard about my kid brother, I knew it was time to come home.”

He waited silently while Mike checked on the dogs and locked up the shelter. Then they got in Adam’s old truck and drove to the police station. Mike expected Adam would just stop and let him out, but the other man cut the motor and got out, too. They went in together. The desk clerk called an officer to speak to them.

Before Mike had finished describing the call, his drive out of town, and the attack, he sensed Adam had become as tense as a drawn bow.

“I remember hearing one of the younger and smaller kids call the leader Jake. The guy got real mad and backhanded the kid for that. He said something about no names.”
