Finn went down first, then looked at Brody. His stiffened body relaxed, and he released the railing. Finn didn’t comment. He sat down on the bottom step and removed his shoes and socks like the previous time. Brody joined him and rolled his trousers up to his knees.
Finn stood up, and offered Brody his hand. Brody glanced up and down the beach, then took it.
When the freezing cold water touched Finn’s toes, his feet cramped in protest. Finn led Brody into the shallows of the sea, until their ankles were submerged in the murky water.
“Okay?” he said softly.
Brody nodded, and tightened his grip on Finn’s hand. They took another step, then another, until the water reached Brody’s knees. He gasped, and Finn stopped.
“What are you thinking?” he asked.
“I—I can’t see my feet.”
Finn nodded. Although the water was murky, the outline of their feet could just about be seen. When the wave rocked past them, the outline blurred to nothing.
