Chapter 41

“You did well today.”

Brody stared at Finn. “I kneeled in the sea, it’s not exactly earthshattering.”

“It’s progress, it doesn’t matter how small.”

“I’m—I’m not—It’s not about that.”

“Then what?”

Brody opened his mouth to reply, but the words seemed to vanish, and he went back to biting his nail again. Finn didn’t push for an answer, instead he switched on the radio to drown out the click of Brody’s teeth against his nail. The music seemed to calm Brody too, and he stopped tapping his foot, and sagged into the passenger door.

Finn pulled into the carpark and offered Brody a reassuring smile. “You sure I can’t take you home.”

“Why are you doing this Finn, why help me?”

“You need help.”

Finn sighed. “Look, just because it didn’t work out between us, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. You don’t let many people in, do you, don’t let them know the real you?”

“There’s nothing interesting to know, apart from surfing.”
