“Yes, that’s right. I’m serious.”
“Austin, babe, I don’t try to hurt myself. It just kind of…happens.”
“Yes, well, I want it to stop. I can’t have my partner on my X-ray table, and I don’t trust anyone else to do it. So, you need to be a million times more vigilant because I can’t stand to see you hurt.”
I started to protest, but then I saw it, that worry underneath his hard, deadly serious gaze. He hated seeing me hurt. I knew none of my friends liked it either, but they had all sort of accepted it was part of who I was. Yes, I was accident prone, but for Austin, I’d do my damnedest to never get hurt again.
“Okay. I promise. Extra vigilant and cautious. And I definitely won’t take risks anymore. Remind me to call Drew and cancel our rappelling expedition the weekend after next.”
He blanched and coughed. “Your what?”
