They stood on guard for several minutes until Cat broke the stillness.

She sounded decided until the final word, spoken in a voice belonging to a different woman. Mason fought not to stare at her face, waited for her to continue.
“You’re wondering whether being alone makes this world easier or harder. I can tell you. Doesn’t make a bit of difference.”
His brow twitched fighting a frown. “But…you’re not at risk of losing anyone.”
“I’m at risk of having no one. Same difference.”
He wasn’t sure he agreed.
