“No. No. Of course not. I don’t mean that. I…I don’t know what I’m saying. Forget I said anything.”

They stood on guard for several minutes until Cat broke the stillness.

“Everyone thinks I sleep around because I find it easier, and they ain’t wrong…entirely.”

She sounded decided until the final word, spoken in a voice belonging to a different woman. Mason fought not to stare at her face, waited for her to continue.

“You’re wondering whether being alone makes this world easier or harder. I can tell you. Doesn’t make a bit of difference.”

His brow twitched fighting a frown. “But…you’re not at risk of losing anyone.”

“I’m at risk of having no one. Same difference.”

He wasn’t sure he agreed.

“You always been gay?”
