Chapter 5

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, it’s just that I have never experienced anything like this. I’ve been so sheltered from my family and culture that it feels like I’ve missed out.”

“Well, like my abuelitasaid, this house is your house. Which means she already sees you as family.”

“Does that mean I have to treat you like a brother?” I said jokingly.

“I hope not.” Frank put his hand on mine and gave it a squeeze.

Frank’s abuelitacame back with two huge plates of food. It all looked so wonderful that I couldn’t wait to dig in. I sliced into the enchilada verdeand made sure to rub some of the sauce into the piece of chicken sticking out at the end. The taste was so good, I had to close my eyes just to savor the moment. I consider myself a good cook, but it was nothing compared to Abuelita’s.

“What do you think?” Abuelita asked.

“The best food I’ve honestly every tasted.”

Abuelita was so pleased to hear those words that she grabbed my face and kissed me right on the cheek.
