Chapter 31

“Start at the beginning, Hollis,” Sarah told him.

So he did, only pausing when she asked for clarification on something, and for a minute when the waiter returned with their meals. “So that’s where it stands,” he said in conclusion.

Sarah nodded and said succinctly, “To begin with, young man, you have to admit that you are what you are.”

“But I’m not,” he shot back.

“Oh Hollis.” She shook her head. “I’ve known you since the first time you were sent to see me in the line of duty. It didn’t take me long to figure out you were gay but as it didn’t interfere with your abilities to do your job it wasn’t something I was willing to pursue. Forcing you to face what you weren’t ready to would have been counterproductive, at least in my opinion. Now you do have to because there’s no way you can hide it from yourself anymore. The way you feel about Vanni will make that impossible no matter how hard you try.”
