Chapter 6

Although he was twenty-two, David had not yet had a talk with his parents letting them know that he was gay, but still, they seemed to have figured it out, and treated Jared the way that David had hoped they might.

A few weeks later, when David drove to Miami, he had expected something similar. A stern looking woman answered the door.

“You must be David,” she said, gesturing for him to enter the foyer. “I have you set up in the spare room.”

David knew that she was Irma, the housekeeper hired after Jared’s mother left to return to Seattle when he was seven. David followed Irma through the one-story rancher. The house was clean and big with hallways that seemed to go on forever, and although there was a plenty of furniture, it seemed a little empty.

“Jared and his father will be home in a few hours. They were stuck at work late. Feel free to relax in the guest room if you like. It has its own bathroom if you want to freshen up.”
