Chapter 13

With the message complete, she begrudgingly sent it. Her foot bounced nervously off the tiled floors and she could feel a cold sweat beginning at the nape of her neck. It was nearing midnight and she was supposed to already have been home hours ago. The next day would be the two-year anniversary of the attack and she wanted to be as far away from the hospital as possible. It was even more reason not to get Nikki involved. She wanted to know what was possible with the enigmatic lawyer but wouldn’t be that selfish.

A hand touched her shoulder and she jumped. “Didn’t mean to scare you,” said Janice, the nursing supervisor. The older woman sat beside her and smiled. “I wanted to let you know we’re covered, and you can go get some rest in the on-call room. You’ve been on the unit for way too long, dear.”
