She shrugged, obviously unperturbed by her parents’ behavior. “It’s been that way for so long now I don’t really mind. They’re the reason I went to law school. They thought it would be the perfect career for me and they were livid when my brother went on to become a veterinarian instead of going into the family business. He and I are completely different from our parents and we’re proud of that,” she chuckled.

“You didn’t want to be a lawyer?”

Nikki snorted and shook her head. “Not really. Well, I hadn’t planned on wasting a law degree bailing out rich snobs and corporate narcissists who knowingly broke the law. But, when I passed my bar exam, I hadn’t given it a second thought before joining my uncle’s firm. I felt as if I didn’t have a choice and it pays extremely well, as I’m sure you could imagine. In hindsight, I always had the choice, but I never took the chance at something else. I stuck with what my parents set up for me. I guess I have that choice now, though.”
