“You made it. I was getting worried.”

I rolled my eyes. “I don’t know why you would, Ma.”

“Leave the boy alone, Marie.” My dad turned to Nina and held out his arms. “You look beautiful, princess.”

“Thank you.” Nina gave a demure courtesy, ruined completely by her wide grin. “Can I sit on your lap, Papa? I want to see better than earlier. I was way at the back and could hardly see when my class saw it today.” She made a face, then turned to me and her expression broke into a knowing grin. “Just you wait, Dad.”

“Oh, so you’re in on the secret, too?” I asked as I took my seat.

Nina just giggled.
