Chapter 18

I mulled over her request for a phone call for a few days, vacillating between confidence that this would be about negotiating my fee, and uncertainty that I had made a grave misstep. I never could handle confrontation well.

Steeling my nerves, I settled down in my favorite chair with a glass of whiskey and dialed Jessica’s number.

“Hello?”

“Jessica, hi. It’s Drew. From Drew’s Web Designs?”

“Drew! Thank you so much for calling me.”

“Absolutely. Is there a problem with the work we discussed?”

“No, no! Not at all. I’m afraid I might have meddled where I shouldn’t have.”

Her brother must not have wanted to spend money on a website. “I can discontinue work on the website. It’s no problem at all.”

“It isn’t the website, actually. You know my brother. Quite well, from what I understand.”

What was she going on about? “You must be mistaken. I’ve never been to Allentown and I don’t believe I’ve ever known anyone by the name of Russell McNee.”
