Chapter 14

He closed his eyes and allowed himself some time to get his breathing under control. Peering out, he looked first the way he had come, then in the other direction. Nothing. Yet still, he crouched. Tyler could be waiting for him on the road. He had his comfortable car to wait in. He could wait there the whole night and not ever be uncomfortable. Unfortunately for Shane, he was already uncomfortable. His legs were beginning to ache and his back was sore where something was digging into it. He stood, then sat, his knees under his chin. Again, he peered out, and again, nothing.

As long shadows crept along the ground and the air became chilly, Shane looked out again.

This is ridiculous, he thought. I’m a grown man
