“But he’ll give me the world,” she said, still feeling unbalanced.
“In this life. What about the next?”
“The next?” she said, looking around. “You mean eternity? I don’t know about eternity. I live in the here and now.” She looked down at the document, grabbed it, and lifted it up, as if to show him. “There are promises here. Promises of fame and fortune. What promise can you make me that can equal his?”
“The promises I made were made a long time ago, Shayde.”
“Yesterday and tomorrow. That’s what you deal in. What about now? I need something now.”
“You will have today, Shayde, but you must trust me.”
Shayde looked around. Where was the director and the crew? This improvisation was going a long time. When would she hear the familiar words of the director calling the scene to a close?
“This is the crossroads, Shayde,”the voice said, interrupting her thoughts and spurring her on to a decision.
