Chapter 8

London said, “I love you.”

Joel pulled back, rolled his eyes, and moaned, “No, you don’t.” He couldn’t keep a smile away.

“If this was one of your mom’s stories, that’s what the character would say. Why did it take a mother to get us to together again?”

“Male pride?”

“Fear from being burnt again.”

“Both.”

London asked, “Can we hit restart?”

Joel’s face lit with his face-splitting smile. “Yes. Tonight? Dinner? Pizza?”

London gave a slow nod as his mouth curled into a huge grin that would make the Cheshire cat jealous. “I love pizza.”

Mom returned. “I didn’t hear yelling or gun shots, so I figured either you made up or someone was being strangled.”

Joel launched himself into her arms. “I love you.”

London came up and pecked her cheek. “You’re an angel.”

She adjusted her invisible halo and pulled London into a hug, something his mom never did.
