As they feared, the nearest patrol officer was miles away, and they were in the far south end of the city, making things worse for back-up.

Joel activated the siren and emergency lights, hidden behind the grill, his pulse pounding. “Dispatch, we’re in pursuit, Northbound Almaden Expressway approaching Redmond. Excess of ninety. Code Thirty!” Joel had never called a Code Thirty, the most serious of any officer needs helpcalls. Officers from around the city and nearby jurisdictions would respond, and they’d need the help assuming this was the murder suspect.

They continued. Maurie said, “Take deep breaths, kid, stay focused.”

At Blossom Hill Road, a major intersection, the Plymouth ran the red at high speed, clipped one car, and slammed into another before hitting a light pole. The driver exited and ran.
