I wanted to tell Myer Colt all of those details, but didn’t. Instead, I kept quiet, knowing that Dunny Sting was still at large and needed to be taken down, arrested, and charged with the murder of his nephew.
It was Myer who surprised me next, sharing more valuable information with me. He said, “You were hired by Benny Sting to find out who murdered his son, right?”
“I was. Why? What concern is that?”
His afternoon cocktail was almost finished and he waved to Shawna for a new one. “There’s a very good reason why Benny Sting hired you. Any guesses what it might be?”
I hadn’t a clue or any suspicions. Dumb as a rock was a good label for me and I wasn’t too proud to wear it. I shook my head at him and said, “I have no idea.”
“As I suspected.” He sounded arrogant and irritating, but I didn’t care because I needed his help. Sometimes a detective will act such a way to learn the things he or she needs to learn in a case. I wasn’t above that method in the slightest.
