“Wait,” Calix called to him.

Another little sound from the animal put Mitch into turbo mode. He momentarily set the fox down, returned to his caracal form, gently picked the guy back up with his teeth, and raced for his cabin. Every stride pummeled his fatigued and frozen body, especially his right front leg, but he ignored it. The small animal’s welfare mattered much more than his discomfort.

By the time he arrived at the cabin, he limped badly, hardly able to put weight on that particular leg. Still, he pushed himself, knowing time was of the essence.
