Chapter 21

“White with black dots and stripes. I think it’s some nice breed.”

Kirk pursed his lips. “I’ll go around your garden later to make sure he isn’t…trespassing. This is not his territory and if he thinks he can waltz in here…” He looked at Felix and shook his head. “The sparrow was his gift to you. He tried to show you he’s a worthy male who can provide for you and keep your home free of pests.”

“Ms. Swan is no pest.”

Kirk grinned, and Felix’s heart flipped. “I’m sorry he killed your friend, babe.”

Felix nodded and ran a thumb over Ms. Swan’s gray feathers. “I’ll bury her.”

Something changed in Kirk’s expression, and Felix cursed those fucking sunglasses. Not seeing someone’s eyes made it hard to read them.

Kirk kissed his forehead before standing. “You’re a good man, Felix. Can I get you anything?”

“What…erm…are you up to today?”

“Nothing, free as a bird.” He winced. “I mean, I don’t have anything I have to do.”
