Did he really have a choice? He truly wanted to be a mage and he knew now he also wanted to build a bond with this surprising master more than anything else. Whatever he had to do to achieve those goals, he’d attempt, putting all his energies into the effort.

“I put myself in your hands,” he said. “By all that is sacred, I swear it. I’m your servant and pupil. Order and I shall obey.”

Cory lifted one eyebrow, more than a hint of skepticism in his expression. “Really? Very well then, I’ll give you a fortnight, maybe two, and see how it goes. Just as I’d have turned you away had you arrived late, I’ll not tolerate any slacking, half-assed efforts. You’ll give me your best or nothing.”
