Diving In

“You can’t be mad.” Sawyer’s voice went up an octave, and he clutched my shirt. “I mean, you can. But please don’t be. I wouldn’t do anything. I wouldn’t cheat. You know that. I love you!”


I kissed him, quick and hard. It was the most effective way to cut off his building panic. And more than that, I wasn’t mad. Confused, yes. But not mad.


“You’ve got feelings for him?” I asked as we pulled apart, my lips still against his. I cupped his head so he couldn’t pull away. But Sawyer just made a pained sound and squeezed his eyes shut.


“We talk about everything, baby. This is fine. Let’s talk about it.” I made my tone as reassuring as possible and it must have worked, because Sawyer relaxed a fraction. His grip loosened, and he started petting my chest. After a moment, he worked his hands underneath my T-shirt and finger-combed my chest hair.
