Chapter 58

“How long have you lived on the boat?”

Wade blinked. I’d surprised him with the change of subject, and I was proud of myself for thinking to ask it. It was an important question. I shot a small smirk at Preston. I could be patient.

“Uh, since we moved here.” He scratched his chin, then ate a forkful of tiramisu. Once he swallowed, he said, “Three years.”

“And you like it?” Preston asked.

It took Wade a moment to speak. “Love it. The water and I are one.”

“How very zen of you,” I teased, but gently. I gave him a kiss on the cheek so he would know I appreciated the sentiment. And honestly, the water itself made me think of Wade. Strong and fluid, graceful, and a little dangerous if you weren’t careful.

Suddenly, I couldn’t stand it anymore. They had both basically finished their desserts, and I grabbed the last bite of Preston’s cheesecake so it would be gone, then downed the last sip of my wine. I needed to be with just them, somewhere else, somewhere peaceful.
