“Whatever it is you’re doing with the married couple.” He emphasized the words as though I didn’t know they were married.

Irritation flared in my chest, but I tried to force it down. I knew he cared—he just needed to work on his delivery. “Really, Jackson. Who do you think I am? A homewrecker?”

“Of course not!” His objection was vehement and sincere-sounding, and I believed him.

“I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of polyamory, too,” I said, not letting him off the hook that easily.

“Of course.”

“Then what’s your problem?”

“I just…worry…about you. I care what happens to you.”

“I know you do. We all know and we’re happy you’ve got our backs. We know you’ll always be there if we need you. But you have to learn when to back off, too.”

He scratched his neck and grimaced. “It’s not easy.”

“I get it. It’s who you are. But you could try trusting us a little.”

“Is this really what you want?”
