“No. I believe he’s gone. There’ll be no trouble. Dad, before you hang up…”

Jay opened his eyes, instinct freezing him. Dean’s long pause made him raise his head. Dean’s gaze met his.

“There’s something else I have to tell you.”

Jay frowned, shook his head. He mouthed, “No.” Dean’s grip tightened. He didn’t hang up

“What Mark said…”

Dean stopped. Jay spoke not a word.

“About Jay and me…”

Jay held his breath, wanting to ask Dean whether he was sure, but Dean seemed to be asking the same. Jay gave him one terse nod, and Dean said without pause, “Mark wasn’t lying.”

Privileged to one side of the conversation, all Jay heard was Dean’s, “Okay,” followed by, “We’ll talk then,” before he ended the call.

“What did he say?”
