Chapter 14

My field of vision grays at the edges and zooms in on the changing man. I shake my head.

Am I hallucinating?

I pinch my leg, but it doesn’t help, he keeps getting smaller. I squeeze my eyes shut, mumbling, “What the heck is happening?”

I fight to fill my lungs with air, but it’s like trying to breathe through a straw and I don’t get nearly enough oxygen into my system. My blood roars in my ears and I sway. I lock my muscles so I won’t crumple into a heap on the floor, and gulp more air.

When I open my eyes, Mio is where Mattis was just a few moments ago—his head sticking out from the neck of the T-shirt, one ear flopping down and the other standing up, but the rest of him is hidden under the fabric. His nose twitches in tempo with my heart.

“Mio?” I whisper. “But…”
