I pick up the clothes and bury my nose in the shirt, my chest restricting as I inhale his scent. After a final sniff, I straighten my back and try to shake off my worry, so I don’t have to take on the woman waiting for me as a trembling ball of nerves.

Mrs. Nyman glares at Mio’s bed when I join her. When she notices the clothes I’m carrying, she pinches the bridge of her nose and shakes her head. “That foolish boy…” she mutters and plops down on the closest chair.

“Um…” I don’t know how to react, and it makes me anxious. My foot bounces and my fingers tap a tattoo against my leg. “Can I help you?”

After an annoyed huff, she leans back and studies me intently. “So you’rethe reason he called me this morning? “

She excels in avoiding answering questions, that’s for sure. “I gu—”
