Chapter 25

“Mom was never a fan of ‘selling me to the highest bidder’ in the first place. She understands why Dad says it has to happen and knows our family can really use the money. The woman comes from a very fertile family, so any other rabbit would be happy to marry her as long as they can overlook her sharp tongue and surly demeanor. My father has told me repeatedly that as long as I fulfill my duties and make babies, I can always have a male lover on the side if I want to. It’s not uncommon.”

“It’s not?”

“No. As long as the wife or husband agrees, a same-sex extra-marital relationship just for fun is no big deal. But that’s not what I want. I want someone to love only me. And I want someone who loves me back.”

“I want that, too,” I whisper.

He threads his fingers through my hair, never taking his gaze off me. “After meeting you earlier, Mom was more inclined to listen to me than this morning.”
