Chapter 28

Mattis chuckles and refills our tea, and when I calm down enough to speak, I wipe my face with the back of my hand. “That sound exactlylike Nana. I’m not the least bit surprised.”

A smile plays in the corners of Mrs. Nyman’s mouth and her eyes are unusually merry when she says, “According to the record keeper, her parents were relieved to see her go. She was a force to be reckoned with and they wanted peace and quiet.”

I nod. “She said her parents were elderly when they got her.”

“She was their last litter. The only kit in the litter, which is very unusual.”

Mattis leans forward and taps his chin with his index finger. “But if Hannes’ Nana was one of us, what about spontaneous shifts?”

“Spontaneous shifts?” I repeat.

“It takes a while for us to master shifting on command. At first, it happens randomly. Kits are usually around four or five before they can control the shift and keep whatever form they’re in.”
