Chapter 38

“See you around, Jason. Thanks for the chat.”

Jason doesn’t respond. He watches Ben hobble away, returning to his job, damaged for life, physically and emotionally. Jason slides Ben’s phone number to the opposite side of the table. He eats and enjoys his salad and onion rings. When he leaves the bistro, he decides not to take Ben’s phone number with him. It stops raining but it’s still icy and cold outside the restaurant. Thank Christ! Jason decides to head home. He climbs inside his Tundra, leaves the bistro’s parking lot and the island, and…approximately four miles away from the island on Barter Run Road he sees the bright glare of red-blue-white strobes in his rearview mirror. His eyes steer to the speedometer and he notes that he’s going fifty-five miles in a forty-five-mile zone. “Fuck! This is not going to be good.”
