Chapter 28

“I swear, I didn’t tell Archie someone pushed him in front of me.”

“You didn’t see Nicky put his hands on Archie at all?”

“I didn’t.”

“Nicky admits he did.”

“I didn’t see it,” Ralph swore.

“Didn’t see it, didn’t say you did.”

“Right,” Ralph reiterated. “You know who else was there, though, on the street when Archie stepped in front of me?” he asked, lowering his glasses, leaning in.

“Who?” I did the same.

“I just remembered. That guy.” Ralph pointed to Preston.

“You don’t say.”

“That, I do say and would again, because it’s true.”

“Gotcha. Enjoy your lemon pie.”

Ralph always ordered lemon pie for dessert. It was as routine as him eating soup five days a week, as predictable as people telling lies.
