“You wanna come over or not?” I asked him. “If you got nothing better to do, see you around eight, we do a few laps, have a beer, and talk.”

“About?”

“Nothing in particular.” That was a lie. My first topic of conversation was already set in my mind.

“Okay. We’ll see,” Preston said. “If not, catch you tomorrow.”

“Either or.”

“Don’t forget your jacket.”

I’d left it on the back of my chair. “I don’t need it.” My badge was in my pocket, my gun at my hip. I was already halfway out the door.

“Okay. See ya.”

“See ya.”

As I passed Ruthie and told her good night, I knew damned well Preston was watching. I also knew we’d be taking a dip together that night.
