“Then why do it?”

“I ask myself that all the time. Maybe I’m done after here. I have an uncle who’s a cop. I thought that might earn me some points with my pop—my father. We.rsquo;re estranged.grdquo;

“Ah.” Something else we had in common. “Did it?”

“Nope. Your father’s a cop. That why you became one?”

“No. I felt the calling. I did other things to earn points, but…What kind of new life are you looking to start?”

“I picture a bed and breakfast in the middle of a pine tree dotted mountainside.”

“That was right there.”

“It was,” Preston said. “I’ve been thinking about it a while. I just need to win the lottery, spend a month on a tropical beach to remember how much I don’t mind the gray and rainy northwest, first, and then go live my dream.”

“Could happen,” I offered. “Someday.”
