“I will. I am,” Alex said adamantly. “If the police do get in touch with me…” Alex paused, taking out his phone. He smiled briefly. “Probably would have helped if I hadn’t turned it off, but they haven’t called, so far.”
“Okay, let’s call it a night,” Jake said, closing down the program, getting off line, and then shutting of the computer.
“Thank you for doing this. All of it,” Alex said. “I never said, and I should have. I want to hire you to keep looking for him.”
“I figured as much,” Jake replied. He got a contract, telling Alex to fill out all the necessary information. When he had, he and Alex signed it and Alex wrote a check for the retainer. “We’ll bill you for the rest by the week. You can cancel anytime if you decide you’re not happy with us.”
“As long as you do your best, that’s all I ask.” Alex wrote out a check and Jake scanned the contract, printing out a copy to give him, since Carol was long gone by then.
