Chapter 11

While he was doing that, Kelly made coffee then sat with Alex on the visitors’ sofa, asking him about everything Alan had told him.

“It wasn’t much,” Alex said. “He never got a good look at the guy. He didn’t think it was anyone he’d ever met, but he said he couldn’t swear to it.”

“What about people you two met at clubs? Did any of them hit on him?”

Alex nodded. “He’d tell me about someone who had while I was off getting our drinks, or going to the men’s room. It happened to me, too.” He smiled bleakly. “It’s sort of the name of the game despite the fact we were obviously a couple. It was never anything blatant, at least in my case, and he said the same. He usually found it amusing. More often than not it was ‘You could do better than him’, implying the guy who said it would be a better choice. You know how that goes.”
