Chapter 32

For the rest of the morning, while he cleaned house, Jake tried to think of any way he could figure out who Fabian was and where to find him—and came up empty. What kind of a detective am I that I can’t locate one fucking man when I know what he looks like?He knew he was beating himself up, again, but it still galled him that he hadn’t been able to stop Fabian from getting his hands on Alan. And now Todd, if we’re right.

It was almost one, and he was getting ready to go grocery shopping and to the Laundromat, when his phone dinged. He smiled when he saw it was Russ.

“Anything?” Russ asked.

“On Todd? Nothing. Paul called Ogden so he’s on it. Ogden even called me to let me know.”

“And told you to butt out?” Russ asked with a trace of amusement in his voice.

“Nope, which surprised me. Not that he invited me come down to the precinct to discuss the finer points of the case.”

“You’d probably have had a heart attack if he had.”

“No kidding.”
