Chapter 37

“They aren’t?”

Jordan shook his head. He usually wasn’t one for conversation. But Steve invited it, and maybe he needed to talk. Jordan cleared his throat. “They’ve passed away. But even if they hadn’t, I couldn’t tell them I’m bi. They’d never accept it.”

Steve nodded sagely and took another drink. “Well, you never have to worry about that here. Okay? I mean, we say shit. We’re going to. But if anyone ever treats you badly or harasses you because of who you are, you’re to tell me. Got it?” Steve pointed at him with one meaty finger and used his dad voice.

Jordan couldn’t help his small smile as he nodded. He opened his mouth to agree, but his phone rang, and since it was his brother’s tone, he rushed to answer. John knew he was at work, and he wouldn’t call if it weren’t important. He shot an apologetic look at Steve as he lifted the phone to his ear.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Jordan.” John sounded strained. “Listen, man. Have you talked to Beckett lately?”
