Chapter 27

Ed came in. His mouth appeared puffy. “The elder said we’ll be leaving tomorrow, Doc?”

“Yes.”

“I really like that woman. She’s beautiful and smart. And did I say beautiful?”

“Yes, you did.”

“Could we stay a little longer?”

“I don’t think that would be fair to Hank.”

“No, you’re right. I’m sorry. The first woman I’m interested in since I lost Betty and the kids, and she has to live on another planet. Oh, well. Good night, Doc.”

“‘Night, Ed. Oh, and Hank asked if you’d be quiet getting ready for bed.”

“Will do.” He closed the door behind him, and I sat in the gloom and thought.

It was a good while later before Nick finally returned. “You didn’t have to wait up for me, you know. I’m a big boy and—” He gasped, obviously remembering his words from all those years ago, and the pain in his eyes broke my heart.

“Nicky, sit down. We need to talk.”

“Again? Look, Doc, I know you don’t want me. Don’t make me have to pretend I don’t care.”
