Chapter 28

“I know. Tony liked to talk about how when you told him Josie was in the hospital with the babies, he’d said he couldn’t wait to see her so he could tell her she’d had a boy and a girl.” He laughed, but there was sorrow in it. His own family had treated him so poorly.

“I registered to father a baby. As a single dad, I had to sign over the rest of the little wigglers in that batch, but I didn’t care.” There was a sheen of tears in his eyes. “I sat in that goddamned waiting room, and then that nurse came out and…Y’know something, Doc? Finding out who had gotten my girlfriend pregnant wasn’t half as bad as learning why I hadn’t gotten Elaine pregnant. The mumps did it; I can never father a child.”
