Chapter 32

“And if we don’t get home?”

“Don’t you understand, Easy? It doesn’t matter. None of it does. This could be hell, but as long as you’re with me, I’d happily spend eternity here.” My voice cracked. Shit, I’d become emotional. I brushed my other hand across my eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. Somehow we’ll get this to work. Meanwhile, we have to get home first. Let’s worry about it then.”

“I…I don’t think I’ve said it, but I love you, Easy.”

“You did say something to that effect when you killed the lion.”

“I did? I don’t remember.” I’d been too petrified to think of anything beyond the possibility of Doc dying before my eyes and me not being able to do a goddamned thing to prevent it.

“I love you, too, Nicky.” His fingers tightened on mine convulsively, and I brought our hands to my mouth and pressed a kiss to his knuckles. “We’d better get to sleep. Tomorrow will be here soon enough.”
