“What’s so funny?”

“You’re asking if we’re there yet.”

“Yeah, I guess that did sound kind of silly. What I meant—”

“I know. I shouldn’t have teased you.” His eyes were warm as they smiled into mine. “The elder said it’s about four hundred miles, so depending on the weather and trail conditions, it could take us as many as twelve days or as few as eight. Elephants walk a little faster than humans.” He gave me a sideways glance.

“What? Hey!” Easy’s elephant had suddenly increased her pace and was starting to leave Rill behind. “Hey!”

“Zelle needs to speak with Van Allyn,” Lish said over his shoulder.

How did he know that? “Yeah, well, follow that elephant.”

Rill’s gait shifted to a faster walk, and I tightened my grip with my knees. “Don’t you let me fall off.” I warned Lish.

“Then hold onto me, Marsham.”

Easy was on Zelle’s right, and we came up on her left. “What’s going on?”
