“And…what you know?” the man asked.

Of course. They’d want to compare the knowledge they’d had eighth- or tenth- hand to what was current to us.

“Yes,” I agreed.

“Please come back to see us when you return and we’ll talk more.”

“We’ll do that. We’d better go. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us, ma’am.”

She nodded graciously.

“Ma’am.” I bowed, and after Ed followed suit, we both turned to walk out.

“Will we ever get home, Doc?”

“I doubt it,” I said softly. “This is home now.”

“Hank’s not going to take this well. Do you think—” He fell silent as we exited the main entryway. “What the fuck?”

Nick was on the ground, holding an unconscious Hank. “I’m sorry, Easy. He was becoming hysterical.”

“Why didn’t you just slap him?” Ed demanded.

“He got the jump on me.” Nick looked up, and I gasped. His eye was starting to swell, and blood was trickling from the corner of his mouth. He gave a painful smile. “At least he didn’t knock a tooth out.”
