“Yes. I’m hoping, if anyone is still there, that they’ll be able to give us more details about what happened to Terra.”

“And if no one is there?”

“That place was out in the desert, and the lack of moisture should have kept the bunkers in decent condition.”

“Bunkers? It’s underground? All right!”

“I will come with you,” Zelle said. “I’ve always wanted to see beyond our mountains. And perhaps when we return, Janes will be ready to accept me as his partner. Mount up.”

“Y’know, Easy, I was going to say I felt sorry for Hank, but I know he likes Zelle, and he’s crazy about her son.”

“Yes. And Ed will manage, because he and the elder seem to have a connection.”

“Hey!” Nick stumbled forward into my arms. One of the elephants had given him a push. “Hey, Lish! Can I handle Rill on my own?”

“If you wish to try.”

“Yeah, I do. Don’t go anywhere, Easy. Up, Rill.”

I watched as she lowered her leg and Nick scrambled up. He patted her head.
