Chapter 54

When Frank didn’t respond, Mark prodded, “Frank? Did you hear what I said?”

“Yes. Yes, I heard you.”

Mark continued. “He has you. The two of you have your love. You’re someone he can trust, someone who means the world to him. If you get caught—you’ll still have each other. The other way, if he’s outed—he’s got nothing.”

Frank sighed. “I didn’t think of it that way. You’re right.” He turned to Mark. “Thank you. I don’t think I’d ever have seen it without you.”

“Go on.” Mark pointed to Bill. “He’s waiting for you.”

Frank gave Mark a hug and made his way around to the other side of the stadium, then down the steps to the field. Almost at the bottom, he stopped and looked back up to where Mark stood. Mark waved. Frank waved back.

Frank continued to the bottom of the stairs and stood behind the low brick wall that separated the stands from the playing surface. Bill sat, head bowed, his elbows on his knees, hands folded. Frank hesitated, then softly said, “Bill.”
