“I never knew my dad. He was killed when his helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.”

There were murmurs of sympathy for Bill’s situation.

“I’m sure he would be very proud of you,” Reverend Bethune said. “Any man would be proud to have a son like you. I know I would.”

“Well, you do have a son you can be proud of,” Bill said, in a totally conversational tone, smiling at Frank. “He’s a great friend and a fantastic athlete to boot.”

“Well, yes, of course we’re proud of Francis,” Frank’s dad said, apparently embarrassed that his idol had perceived he was in some way not proud of his son.

“He’s done really well on the U’s gymnastics team this year. There’s even talk of him being considered for the Olympics,” Bill added.

Frank looked at Bill with raised eyebrows. Bill winked and smiled.

“Well, Francis, we had no idea,” Frank’s father said.

Neither did I,Frank thought.

“That’s wonderful, dear,” his mother added.
