Chapter 25

“Or,” I said slowly, drawing the word out, “I can sit for the New York State bar.”

It took a second for my words to sink in. As soon as they did, Zack’s eyes went wide. His voice was filled with awe when he asked, “You would do that?”

I shrugged like it was no big deal, even though I’d have to study hard and sit for the exam. Unfortunately, California and New York didn’t have reciprocal admittance. “Yeah, of course. I mean, you and Josie are both there. It would make more sense for me to come to you.”

There was a moment of dead silence, and I was pretty sure neither of us dared to breathe. Then Zack lunged forward and threw himself into my arms. He held me so tightly, I couldn’t draw air. I didn’t even care. Breathing was overrated.

“I love you.” He said it over and over, his lips against my neck. I reveled in it, let the feelings wash over me, until my heart felt like it would burst.
