When I’d walked by the store a few minutes ago, I’d spotted Lei behind the counter. No Louie in sight. But Louie could have been in the back store with Al. What could be my excuse for showing up in the middle of the afternoon?


I’d figure it out. Needed to have a moment alone with Lei, that was all.


I caught my reflection in the glass door. I looked good in my favorite blue tee. That T-shirt made my eyes stand out. I hesitated a second, but finally pulled the door open and stepped into the air-conditioned store. The door didn’t have a bell or chime to announce a customer walking in, but nevertheless, Lei immediately looked up and his eyes widened slightly. “Oh, hi…”
