Chapter 15

Lei didn’t say anything. He went behind the counter and slung a black leather bag over his shoulder.

Al watched him for a second and then patted his arm. “Get some rest,” he whispered.

“Yeah, don’t worry, Pops.” Lei walked away, but as he passed me, he paused and pointed to the black box near my feet. “Digital amp,” he said with a shy, barely noticeable smile.

Had to take a chance. Had to. “Hey, I haven’t had caffeine in almost an hour, so before I go into shock, would you show me where the nearest coffee shop is, please?”

Lei eyed me over and arched a brow. “Sure.”

Before we stepped out, I waved at Al. “Next time, I’ll put a deposit on a grand piano. Would you accept ten dollar yearly installments?”

Al gave me a peace sign.

Outside, Lei pointed to the Starbucks on the other side of the street. “There.” He had a deadpan expression. “Coffee.”

“Okay, thanks,” I stammered, losing my confidence. “I hadn’t seen it there for some reason.”
