“You’re right. I’m sorry.”
“No, please, don’t apologize. I can get a little touchy about my work, and it has nothing to do with you.”
Lei nodded again and sipped his tea. His phone was lighting up on the table. “I’m sorry, do you mind?”
“No, go ahead.” I instinctively took out my own phone, scrolling down the news feed, but there could have been aliens descending on earth, landing on the White House lawn, and I wouldn’t have reacted. Too focused on Lei’s sporadic sentences.
“No, I’m not home,” he was saying. There was a long pause. “I’m having a coffee with Micah,” he added quietly. He looked at me. “My mother says hi.”
“Oh, well, ditto.” I tapped my phone, shutting the screen off.
